Poll: Canadians oppose private health care
Toronto -
A report commissioned by the Ontario Medical Association says most Canadians don't want private interests taking over health care services. It also suggests that 47 cents of every tax dollar will be allocated to health care by the year 2020, up from 36 cents in 1999.
Health care costs are expected to double by 2020, when 31% of Ontario's population will be over age 55 and in need of more medical care.
The study estimates the province will be spending $39 billion on health care by 2020 because of the aging population and inflation.
But figures indicate 50% to 70% of those surveyed would not support user fees or other forms of privatization of health care. (19 October 2000)
